Da Nang, Artisans of Danang

The Marble Mountain area has long been a source of inspiration for Vietnam's artisans, blending the natural beauty of the countryside with unique architectural influences. Your artistic journey begins as you stroll along Da Nang's tree-lined streets on the way to the Cham Museum, an ethnographic facility established in 1939 by the French Ecole Française d'Extrême Orient. The museum showcases original sculptures in four sections based on their origins. Next, your coach will take you seven miles from the city center to the stunning Marble Mountains. Here, you'll enjoy a 45-minute walk around this historic site, where the five peaks represent the five elements of feng shui. During the Cham period, this marble ridge was a Hindu sanctuary, and later, Vietnamese Buddhists built pagodas dedicated to Buddha and Confucius. Today, Buddhist shrines occupy several mountain caves, some of which were bombed during the war. The tour concludes with a visit to the Linh Ung Pagoda, where you'll see a towering Lady Buddha statue facing the sea before returning to the ship.

Da Nang, My Son Heritage Site

Nestled in a lush valley and surrounded by the Hon Quap Mountains, My Son is a stunning archaeological site that was once a Holy Land built in the 4th century. It served as the most important religious and intellectual center of the Champa kingdom, which thrived between the 2nd and 15th centuries. The site, with its towers rising dramatically out of the thick jungle and cut through by clear streams, reflects nine centuries of occupation. Through extensive trade relations with India, the Cham adopted Hinduism and Sanskrit, shaping their sacred culture. The Cham people, lacking agricultural land, relied on piracy and trade, often engaging in wars with the Vietnamese to the north and the Khmers to the west. My Son is considered the Champa culture's equivalent to other grand, Indian-influenced cities in Asia, such as Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Myanmar, Ayutthaya in Thailand, and Borobudur in Java. The Cham are best known for their brick sanctuaries, the Cham Towers and temples dedicated to their kings and various divinities, adorned with intricate carvings. Though heavily damaged by time and the Vietnam War, My Son is slowly being restored, and the remaining monuments evoke a sense of awe and contemplation, standing as striking reminders of this ancient culture.

Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi Tunnels by Speed Boat & War Museum (Includes Lunch)

Journey by comfortable speedboat for approximately 1 1/2 hours along the scenic Saigon River to the historic Cu Chi site. Along the way, enjoy the picturesque views and tropical fresh fruits served during your journey. Cu Chi is synonymous with the Vietnam War and stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Vietnamese people. The underground network of tunnels is a fascinating part of history. Construction on the tunnels began during the war against the French in the 1940s, and over the following 25 years, as the conflict with the U.S. escalated, the system was expanded into an underground city. It included meeting areas, storerooms, living quarters, and more. The tunnels were instrumental in allowing the Viet Cong to control a strategic area of South Vietnam, stretching over 200 kilometers from Saigon to the Cambodian border. Today, preserved as a memorial park, two sections of the network are open to the public. At Ben Dinh, you'll have the opportunity to explore parts of the tunnels firsthand. For those feeling more adventurous, you can venture deeper into the tunnels, with your guide providing insights and guidance on the difficulty level. There's also plenty to see above ground, so make sure to wear good footwear, sunscreen, and a hat. Note that if you choose to explore the tunnels, it can be a bit dusty! After your visit, return to Ho Chi Minh City by speedboat, with a delicious lunch at a rustic restaurant. Spend some time exploring the War Remnants Museum, which primarily focuses on the Vietnam War but also features exhibits from the French colonial period and the First Indochina War before heading back to the port. Please note: The Cu Chi Tunnels are not wheelchair accessible. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring sunscreen and a hat. You may get dusty if you decide to go underground.
