In this enchanting city the past and present intersect in perfect harmony. Casually intermingled among ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals are the trappings of a modern metropolis: Skyscrapers, cafes, boutiques selling designer footwear. But of course what you seek first in the heart of Rome is its breathtaking history.  A good place to begin is the Vatican, with its Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Works by Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Raphael are just a few of those on display, any one of which is worth hours of contemplation. Then the ancient ruins-Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus. And of course the Trevi Fountain for the obligatory coins promising your return to the Eternal City.

Fiskardo, Melissani Lake & Ouzo Tasting *

The varied landscapes of Kephalonia seem like they have been created by the hands of a dreaming god. The coastline is like a lace of sheer cliffs plunging into a turquoise sea and gentle pebbly and sandy beaches. The hinterland is a mosaic of densely forested mountains and well cultivated hills and valleys. Small villages and towns emerge from the pines and the cypress trees, topped by Venetian castles and chapels. You will drive to the village of Karavomylos where the mysterious, 40,000-year-old, underground Melissani Lake is located. During the 1953 earthquake, the cave's roof collapsed, creating amazing light displays on the cave walls. Legend says the lake is named for the nymph Melissanthe, who fell in love with Pan and drowned in the lake when he rejected her. A small boat will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking trip across its mysteriously salty, subterranean water. You will find yourself surrounded by a vast, shimmering play of blue and violet colors, created by the sun filtering through the hole in the ceiling more than 100 feet overhead. The headwater is in Argostólion, and it enters the cave by traveling across the island and through holes in the coastline. Your tour will continue to the village of Sami, for a refreshment stop for ouzo (aniseed flavored liqueur) and Greek meze at a waterfront restaurant. Please note : Wear comfortable walking shoes. Sorrento, Herculaneum *

The city of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded around the 4th century B.C., copying the geometric regularity of the layout of Naples. Its "decumani" (main streets) have an east-west orientation, while the "cardines" (narrower streets) run north-south. There is undeniably a "feeling" about Herculaneum, quite different from Pompeii, where you get the impression that its ancient population of 5,000 packed up and left only moments ago. Herculaneum was smaller than Pompeii but is better preserved simply because, while hot ashes consumed the wood of Pompeii's buildings, Herculaneum was covered by hot mud which sealed and protected entire city blocks. This means that marble floors, mosaics, paintings and carbonized woods can still be admired today. You will discover the ancient luxurious properties and villas including the House of the Mosaic , the House of Deer , the Thermae (baths) and the House of Carbonized Furniture . After a guided tour, you will be driven back to meet the yacht in Sorrento. Please note : This tour involves considerable walking on uneven pathways. Bring a sun hat, as shade is limited. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
